Help People with Disabilities: Donate Medical Supplies

Every year, thousands of adults with developmental disabilities struggle to access basic medical supplies and adaptive equipment that support their independence. When you help people with disabilities by donating gently used or new items, you’re not just clearing space in your home—you’re changing lives.

At Delta Center for Independent Living (DCIL), we work every day to help people with disabilities live as independently as possible. For many of the individuals we serve, access to the right tools—such as walkers, wheelchairs, or communication devices—can be the difference between dependence and self-sufficiency.

How Your Donations Help People with Disabilities Live More Independently

Many individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with Autism, face significant financial challenges. Insurance often doesn’t cover the full cost of assistive technology or durable medical equipment, and public resources can be slow or limited. That’s where community support steps in. When you help people with disabilities by donating medical supplies and equipment, your generosity directly fills critical gaps, often without delay and without red tape.

What Kinds of Items Can You Donate?

DCIL gratefully accepts a variety of gently used or new items. These include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Manual and power wheelchairs
  • Walkers and rollators
  • Shower chairs and tub transfer benches
  • Adult incontinence supplies
  • Reachers, grabbers, and dressing aids
  • Communication devices and tablets
  • Hospital beds and patient lifts

Before donating, we ask that items be clean, in good working condition, and free from major wear or damage. If you’re unsure about a particular item, give us a call; we’re happy to clarify.

Ways Your Support Can Help People with Disabilities Thrive

Donated supplies are distributed directly to individuals in need through DCIL’s gently used wheelchair to help people with disabilitiesEquipment Reuse and Loan programs. We match items with clients who are facing  mobility challenges, sensory processing disorders, or other disabilities that impact daily living.

Here’s how your donation can help people with disabilities:

  • A donated wheelchair allows someone to attend a job training program.
  • A tablet with a communication app helps a non-verbal adult express their needs.
  • A shower chair increases safety and independence for someone living alone.
  • Share our medical equipment exchange program webpage with someone who might benefit from the program.

These are more than donations; they are acts of empowerment.

A Community Effort

Your contribution doesn’t just support individuals – it supports families and caregivers too. Parents and guardians are often the primary advocates for their loved ones, and your donation gives them one less hurdle to overcome. By donating equipment, you’re helping build a more inclusive and compassionate community.

Whether you’re cleaning out a garage, upgrading your own equipment, or supporting a loved one who’s passed, there’s meaningful purpose in passing it forward.
