If you’re living with a disability (or care for someone who is), navigating the world of government assistance and support programs can feel overwhelming. But with the right information and resources, you can make the most of your benefits and access services that improve your quality of life, support your independence, and stretch every dollar further.
At Delta Center for Independent Living, we work with people across St. Charles County and surrounding areas to connect them with the support they need, whether it’s understanding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), enrolling in Medicaid, or tapping into other local, state, and national programs designed to make life easier.
Here’s a breakdown of some key programs, tips for maximizing their impact, and free resources that can help you make the most of your benefits in 2025.
Understanding SSDI and Medicaid
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides monthly payments to individuals who have a qualifying disability and have previously worked and paid Social Security taxes. The amount you receive depends on your work history and earnings record. SSDI may also allow dependents, such as children, to receive additional benefits.
Medicaid is a state and federally funded program that helps low-income individuals with healthcare coverage. In Missouri, the program includes MO HealthNet, which
covers doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital care, home and community-based services, and more.
Once you’re approved for SSDI, you’ll automatically qualify for Medicare after a 24-month waiting period, but many people are also eligible for Medicaid during that time, which can help cover critical needs in the meantime. SSDI can provide invaluable support, so it’s important to make the most of your benefits.
Free and Low-Cost Resources in Missouri
To make the most of your benefits, it helps to be aware of the wide range of programs that go beyond monthly checks. Many of these are free or income-based and designed specifically for adults with disabilities:
Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services
VR helps individuals with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment. Services may include:
- Career counseling
- Job placement
- Assistive technology
- Skills training
Centers for Independent Living (CILs)
As a proud CIL, Delta Center offers advocacy, peer support, skills training, transition services, and help navigating benefit systems. Every Missouri county has access to a local CIL; you can find yours through the Missouri Statewide Independent Living Council.
Missouri Assistive Technology (MoAT)
MoAT provides access to low- and no-cost assistive devices that help with daily tasks, mobility, hearing, vision, and communication. They also offer short-term equipment loans and a statewide device recycling program.
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
This federal program helps cover utility bills and prevent shutoffs. In Missouri, LIHEAP applications are managed by the Missouri Department of Social Services.
Transportation Services
Public transportation can be limited, but services like RideFinders, OATS Transit, and local paratransit programs offer affordable rides for those with disabilities. In St. Charles, the St. Charles County Transit Authority also offers programs to support accessible travel.
Tips to Make the Most of Your Benefits
If you want to make the most of your benefits, organization and planning are key. Here’s how:
- Keep Complete and Accurate Records
Maintain a file with your award letters, doctor reports, and benefit notifications. Being able to quickly provide documentation can save time and prevent delays. - Report Changes Promptly
If your income, work status, or living situation changes, report it immediately to avoid overpayments or benefit interruptions. - Use a Benefits Counselor
Benefits specialists, often available through your local CIL, can help you understand how employment, savings, or additional support might affect your benefits. - Look into ABLE Accounts
ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) accounts let eligible individuals save money without affecting their SSI or Medicaid. Missouri’s ABLE program is called MO ABLE. - Stay Informed
Benefit rules and income limits change over time. Sign up for newsletters from organizations like the National Disability Institute or the Social Security Administration to stay updated.
